Sir Thomas' Facilities & Local Distractions
Sir Thomas' at Toucan Sittee is 18 acres of pristine jungle situated on the banks of the Sittee River. The plant life has been managed over the last 18 years to include almost every sub-tropical and tropical plant found in Central and South America. Visit and camp in our
TaTa DeHundee Wildlife Park, complete with trails, blinds, feeding stations, and camping areas. Where the vegetation is lush with beautiful flowers, and the birds and wildlife are abundant. Animal and particularly bird life are our specialty. The Audubon Society of Belize, recently (March 28, 2009) surveyed the property and observed "97 bird species in the first 60 minutes" of their study. We are one of the few birding areas where birds of the sea, river and the broad leaf forest can be observed. Bring your binoculars and camera. We provide a checklist of observed birds.
The Sittee River offers a wonderful opportunity to see and experience jungle life. Take a canoe or kayak up and down the Sittee and then visit tributaries such as Boom Creek, which passes around the edge of TaTa DeHundee, or go the water way to Anderson and Sapodilla Lagoons. We provide canoes and kayaks at a nominal charge to our guests and can provide guides for those who want to see it all and get the correct information.
The Sittee and contiguous ocean and mangrove-lined lagoons offer a wonderful opportunity for fisherman whether you fish with lures, live bait, or are an avid fly fisherman. We can provide guides who will offer you opportunities to catch Tarpon, Barracuda, Snook, Jack Crevalle, Permit, Bone fish, etc. It is easy enough to bring your favorite rod, reel, and lures/flies or guides can provide that for you. Please keep us advised to your preferences.
Southern Belize is rich in adventures. The Mayan Experience is one of the finest. Spend the day with the Ketchi Mayans of Indian Creek and tour their homes and observe their daily activities. These include weaving, artwork, and cooking (you will be served one of their delicious lunches). For the adventurous you can hike to their sacred, beautifully pristine, and untouched limestone caverns and even camp there over night (by permission of the Mayans only). They are spectacular and you can see images on the side of this page.
Animal preserves such as Jaguar Preserve are close by and considered day trips. You can hike to beautiful waterfalls or take a kayak, or by horse back and maybe see one of those beautiful spotted kitties. Mayflower National Park offers unexcavated Mayan ruins with waterfalls nearby. And, if all this does not keep you occupied... there is snorkeling and diving around the 2nd largest reef in the world. Worldclass diving and snorkeling facilities are readily available only 3 miles from Sir Thomas'. We can arrange it all!!!!!!
